PENNY LATEY PUTS FEET FIRST

Penny Latey turns Pilates on its head to address Feet – admittedly not the most glamorous part of the body – however a part of the anatomy that is largely taken for granted until something goes wrong.  As Pilates practitioners we often see feet that are neglected, injured, genetically compromised or just ‘not quite right’.  Luckily for us, feet are Penny’s passion! She has spent several years researching poor ‘foot posture’ in relation to poor body posture whereby dysfunctional foot biomechanics can lead to a myriad of compensatory patterns. This workshop has a practical emphasis and will demonstrate how Pilates can re-educate clients to appreciate their feet and assist with rectifying foot pathologies, genetic traits and injuries within the Pilates context.

In this 4 hour workshop you will learn:

1 Foot and ankle anatomy – a useful refresher lesson!

2 How to assess and diagnose individual foot types in terms of alignment, ROM across the 5 arches, and in 3 different stances.

3 Practical identification of a wide range of foot pathologies including those related to arches, genetic issues such as hallux valgus, systemic problems such as diabetes and OA, as well as specific problems such as plantar fasciitis and Morton’s Neuroma (plus many more!)

4 Treatment pathways and exercises to address specific problems using unloaded mat work, equipment and functional gravity work.

You will also get to enjoy one of Penny’s challenging standing  Mat workouts!

ABOUT PENNY LATEY

Penny Latey first discovered the benefits of Pilates as a contemporary dancer in London. Injuries she sustained as a trainee classical ballet caused her to seek professional help.  She found it in the Pilates Method that had been brought back from America by Alan Herdman in the early 1970’s at the Place, London School of Contemporary Dance.

In 1980 Penny set her career on teaching Pilates and began an apprenticeship with Dreas Reyneke until pregnancy interrupted her studies.  After her first child she realized that the traditional Pilates method was very helpful for the ultra fit dancer but seemed out of tune with good function of the normal healthy body.

If the Pilates Method was to attract non dancers the method needed to change. With this realisation, Penny began studying functional anatomy, particularly of the pelvic floor and teaching modified Pilates for pre and post natal clients.

Recommencing her apprenticeship, she undertook extensive courses in anatomy physiology and massage, as well as a course in post and antenatal counselling. With this plus her constant enquiry and discussion with other Pilates practitioners, Osteopaths and  therapeutic masseuses she strove to adapt her own unique approach to Pilates.

This included the development of new exercises, changing the traditional ideal postural alignment to an anatomically correct spinal alignment and broadening the definition of the Center (a pivotal tenant of the method) to include the lower abdomen and pelvic floor. By substantially adapting and modifying traditional Pilates, the method became accessible to pre and post natal clients and the general population.

In 1988 Penny moved to Australia and a year later, she opened her first Pilates Studio. In 1994, she together with a small group of Pilates practitioners in Australia began the development of the first independent association of Pilates, the Australian Pilates Method Association (APMA). In 1996 she was elected the foundation President of that association, a position she held for three years. During that time she created the APMA Constitution and trade Mark Certification, and drove the Code of Conduct and Education strategy.

Her contribution to the development of the Pilates Method is also widely recognized overseas. The first Australian to be invited to USA to present at the Mind Body conference, she has also worked closely with the South Korean Pilates Association in Seoul, assisting to establish the Pilates method in that country.
