Presenters

Maggie Macgill is a Pilates and Chi Running® educator with twenty years of international teaching experience. She is a graduate of the Master’s Program at The Pilates Centre in Boulder, Colorado, holds a degree in research methods and is a qualified life coach. Maggie has enjoyed a dynamic career, working in athlete training facilities, biomedical clinics and studios across Australia and North America. Her clients have included those with complex injury and chronic pain, a divers range of professional sportspeople, paralympians and Olympic gold medallists.

Maggie’s teaching is strongly influenced by her commitment to translating the Pilates method into fluid and efficient running form. She delivers her Pilates On The Run workshops to movement practitioners and running coaches internationally. Maggie thrives on her continuing education and growth as a practitioner, in particular through her connection to The Pilates Centre in Boulder, the Chi Running® instructor community and her studies in Body Mind Centering®. Maggie has practiced Pilates every day since she began teaching 1999. She loves the way it gives her the ability to tackle challenging hikes in remote wilderness areas and run in a way that feels amazing to her body. 

Systems of Support: Sensing, sequencing and initiating movement through our organs for greater rhythm, energy and flow on the run.

Our organs are the source of our inner vitality. Occupying our inner space, they provide us with an internal organisation that; gives full bodied support to our skeletal alignment and contributes to the patterning of fine muscular co- ordination. As we run, our legs are there to provide us with the support necessary to free up the rhythm, energy and movement of our organ systems. The ‘support phase’ of a runner’s stride - the moment when a runner lands on their forward leg – sets up our legs’ supportive function. Powerful, flowing movement can only occur when there is whole body integration in this critical moment of a runner’s stride. Sadly, many runners over push with their legs or land with their foot ahead of their centre. This means that they do not achieve whole body integration during the support phase of their stride. This places significant stress on the organs, which in turn reduces energy, increases tension and creates excessive work for the musculoskeletal system. As Pilates practitioners, we are privileged to engage with a movement system that highlights the importance of organ vitality and the supportive role that our legs play to our vital organs.

In this workshop, we will use the Pilates repertoire to understand the key role that our organs play in creating whole body integration and deep abdominal support. We will then explore ways to use our legs to provide the moment-to- moment support necessary to freeing up the energy of our organ systems to create powerful flowing movement on the run.

 

Stephanie Glickman has owned and operated Armature Pilates & Strength in Brunswick, Victoria since 2006. She is certified through five Pilates schools (Stott Pilates, Pilates ITC, Polestar, APMA and Breathe Education) and has worked extensively in the Pilates and fitness industry for the past 17 years. She is passionate about bridging the complementary modalities of Pilates and strength training. A former Stott Pilates Instructor Trainer, Stephanie is a trainer for Breathe Education across Cert IV and Diploma courses and regularly presents nationally in the fitness and Pilates arena. She is a Level 4 APMA member and a Principal Trainer member with the PAA. 

Pilates and Strength Training Unite

Saturday 22 August 2020 - 9.00am - 11.00am

With its active mobility and full range body weight positions, Pilates is an ideal compliment to traditional strength training and weight lifting. This workshop takes Pilates and related mobility exercises to improve biomechanics and load tolerance for movements like chin/pull ups, deadlifts and overhead squats. Part theory, with a lot of practical sequencing, Pilates and Strength Training Unite is chock full of ideas for working with all clients, whether or not they have specific strength goals. 


Katie found Pilates in the USA before relocating to Darwin, Australia in 2007 where she opened Darwins first fully equipped Pilates studio. In her early 20’s she was warned that her spine would not be able to carry her into her 40’s, but never one to play by the rules, she has defied all warnings and is living life to the fullest, with Pilates being her saving grace and adventure sports her lifelong passion.

Paving the way for the industry in the Top End, Katie is recognised as a small business alumni by the National Telstra Business Awards since 2013 and she is an active member of Her Business Marketing Mastermind, Australia.

Katie holds certificates with BASI, PITC, Polestar is a teacher trainer with Body Organics Australia, and Level 2 Trainer for Pilates Alliance Australasia.

When at home Katie is most passionate about working with complex conditions and advocates healing through movement and meditation. She is contracted by Darwin Army Barracks to help injured soldiers recover from horrific injuries and she works mostly with chronic pain, disabling injuries and mental health.

Having established Pilates in Northern Australia, Katie sets herself aside by bringing her business nouse to the floor. Her success has little to do with luck and everything to do with strategy and planning, with a background in business management that has allowed her to flourish in a little known hub at the top end of Australia.

Her passion for life is contagious and her story of success is both elevating and inspiring.

- strengthen the foundation on which your business can grow

- find the FUN in your business

 

Geri Taylor has been teaching movement for 40 years, since the time of Jane Fonda and leg warmers, and teaching Pilates for 20 years. The first time she did Pilates she thought “this is the best exercise ever, and every- one should be doing it.” She still thinks the same.

Geri has taught Pilates in Australia, the US and Europe, and travelled the world to study with many of Pilates elders and most respected teachers. She holds an Advanced Diploma of Pilates, is a Level 4 Trainer with the APMA and PAA, and has done intensive study with Polestar, Fletcher and Stotts Pilates.

Five years ago she discovered the importance of fascia and went on to do a Diploma of Bowen Therapy. She uses the principles of myofascial release and the subtle body work of Bowen to help her clients get the best from their bodies.

Pilates for Fit and Flexible Fascia

Fascia surrounds and supports every muscle, joint, bone, every cell in the body, making up about 20 percent of the body’s weight. As well as being a tissue, fascia is also a communication system, a network that connects every part of the body, to every other part. Whenever you move anything in your body, everything else may be affected.

So, how does this relate to Pilates? This workshop will explore the structure and function of fascia, and how to use Pilates exercises to train the fascia.

Using a chair as the prop, we will explore movements to keep the body strong and stretchy, flexible and resilient, hydrated, and with enhanced proprioception and awareness.

Adding the principles of fascial fitness to the practice of Pilates will help the body become more balance and aligned, with less aches and pains, and more energy and awareness.

Integrating Pilates at the Barre

This class consists of how we add Pilates movements fused with fitness techniques to the barre. Learn fundamental movements of Pilates and barre fused together while moving to the beat of the music. We will also bust some of the myths about the terminology and alignment we often hear that is connected with barre work.
 
Be prepared to move with this fun but informative class if you’re interested in adding more barre influences to your teaching repertoire. Taught by Tracey Mallett creator of bootybarre and barreless. 
 

Karlie is a Brisbane based Pilates Instructor who works at various studios in Brisbane, hold classes for private clients, and also work for some big corporate businesses in the area.Karlie is a trained Barre, Reformer, and Mat Pilates instructor and absolutely loves what she does!

After working for 10 years in the marketing and events industry, Karlie found Pilates by pure chance. She had always been into health and fitness but had never found anything that transformed her body, mind and spirit like Pilates. She signed up to an anatomy course, and shortly moved onto her matwork qualifications – all while working full time. Karlie was so excited to have finally found her ‘thing’, her ‘passion’ and knew this was what she wanted to do all day, every day. Karlie has suffered from lower back and knee pain since highschool (thanks cross country running!), so was amazed that she would walk out of a Pilates class feeling reenergised, feeling a ‘good’ sore rather than completely exhausted and fatigued.Over the last 5 years she has evolved her style of teaching to include a fusion of pilates, barre, yoga, and functional training that she knows you will love. Karlie wants to introduce as many people as possible to Pilates, and encourage them to live a happy, healthy and well balanced life.
