Doing Our Homework

Friday 23 October 2020 – 3.30pm – 5:00pm

Sunday 25 October 2020 – 1:00pm – 2.30pm

There’s only so much we can help during our sessions with clients. Often long-term change needs to come from the client’s efforts at home. Despite adherence being researched broadly over the past 15 years, more needs to be done in our clinics (and our clients’ homes) to make our changes stick.

This Masterclass will discuss exercise adherence in light of several contrasting sciences: behaviour change, happiness, habit-formation and gamification. By juxtaposing these topics, we are able to consider more aspects of our clients’ needs – the obstacles they face and their motivation for change.

Knowing that we all have something we could improve upon within our own life, this is an interactive workshop. Bring your wish list and an open mind to start here now.

Sensational Me

Saturday 24 October 2020 – 10.30am – 12.00pm

We have eight senses and all of those are an essential part of understanding the movement feedback loop and also our emotional response loop.

Pilates teachers intuitively work and incorporate and stimulate these senses. This workshop will explore the three internal senses - vestibular, proprioceptive and interoceptive senses and how this can be applied to assist programming and cueing in the studio.

There will be a theory component explaining how these various systems work and interrelate and how there can be breakdowns in these systems that need to be addressed in a client program, eg problems with our sensory systems.

Sensational Life

Saturday 24 October 2020 – 1.00pm – 2.30pm

This workshop will explore the changes of the sensory systems throughout the lifespan.

There will be a theory review explaining the changes from childhood through to older age. Understanding the differences and changes in these systems as we grow and age is important for programming for clients young and old alike. There are also very specific sensation changes linked to specific conditions and diseases. Understanding these changes and how to modify and adjust to our clients will allow us to work better with a variety of conditions.

Sensational Studio

Saturday 24 October 2020 – 3.00pm – 4.30pm

MUSIC LIGHTS ACTION may work in some environments, but when you work with clients with sensory processing issues it can be a disaster when it comes to teaching and retention. Our nervous system receives information from our physical environment and it is little wonder that studio environments can impact on what and how our clients learn, respond and even regulate their nervous system. Understanding the impact of equipment and prop choices are also part of the story. The concept of sensory profiles will also be explored and what that means for structuring sessions. In this workshop we look at some simple sensory modulation tools that can assist teachers and clients alike.

Systems of Support: Sensing, sequencing and initiating movement through our organs for greater rhythm, energy and flow on the run.

Saturday 24 October 2020 – 8.30am – 10.00am

Sunday 25 October 2020 – 8.30am – 10.00am

Our organs are the source of our inner vitality. Occupying our inner space, they provide us with an internal organisation that; gives full bodied support to our skeletal alignment and contributes to the patterning of fine muscular co- ordination. As we run, our legs are there to provide us with the support necessary to free up the rhythm, energy and movement of our organ systems. The ‘support phase’ of a runner’s stride - the moment when a runner lands on their forward leg – sets up our legs’ supportive function. Powerful, flowing movement can only occur when there is whole body integration in this critical moment of a runner’s stride. Sadly, many runners over push with their legs or land with their foot ahead of their centre. This means that they do not achieve whole body integration during the support phase of their stride. This places significant stress on the organs, which in turn reduces energy, increases tension and creates excessive work for the musculoskeletal system. As Pilates practitioners, we are privileged to engage with a movement system that highlights the importance of organ vitality and the supportive role that our legs play to our vital organs.

In this workshop, we will use the Pilates repertoire to understand the key role that our organs play in creating whole body integration and deep abdominal support. We will then explore ways to use our legs to provide the moment-to- moment support necessary to freeing up the energy of our organ systems to create powerful flowing movement on the run.

Breakfast Club Workout - The Starfish Meditation: A performance enhancing meditation on movement for athletes, artists and people who love to move.

Sunday 25 October 2020 – 7.00am – 7.50am

The Starfish Meditation is based on the naval radiation movement pattern, developed in utero. This movement pattern sets up our ability to move from our centre. This mat master class begins with the Starfish Meditation and smoothly transitions into a meditative Pilates mat-workout. Naval radiation is a developmental stage from the Body-Mind Centering approach, which Maggie has studied for the past ten years with Alice Cummins in Melbourne. Maggie has found her Starfish Meditation to be of great benefit to her work with professional sportspeople, paralympians and Olympic gold medallists.
