More than 20% of pregnant women may be affected by pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy. It's important to recognise that Pelvic girdle pain is different to pregnancy related low back pain and can have a significant impact on a woman's ability to exercise during an otherwise uncomplicated pregnancy. Pilates can offer a safe option to women experiencing pelvic girdle, however; must be modified appropriately. This workshop will be delivered by a Specialist Women's Health Physiotherapist and APPI Pilates Instructor and educator - Jenny Phillips. Physiological adaptations and implications for exercise during pregnancy will be reviewed before then focusing on pelvic girdle pain; its prevalence, how to recognise common symptoms and how to adapt Pilates teaching to this population.

Presenter Jenny Phillips is an APA Continence and Women’s Health Physiotherapist, meaning she has gained extra recognition by her professional body regarding her knowledge and expertise in this clinical area. She treats women all through the ages, with continence, prolapse and pelvic pain problems, and also treats many women through pregnancy and postpartum for pelvic girdle and low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and mastitis, amongst other problems. In addition to her clinical work, Jenny has lectured at the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) and the University of South Australia on topics related to women’s health and continence.

Jenny gained her initial Pilates experience 10 years ago, and is now an APPI Pilates instructor and course educator. She conducts the APPI antenatal and postnatal Pilates courses in Adelaide and is also involved in presenting the APPI matwork series. Clinically, she teaches numerous Pilates equipment and matwork classes weekly, including pregnancy and Mums & Babies Pilates classes. She has also lectured at the APA on exercise in pregnancy.
