Bodyreading - A Whole Body Approach to Assessing Posture
As Pilates instructors we are all assessing the posture of our clients every day in the studio. But what assumptions underlie what we see when we look at a body? Traditional views of posture and bio-mechanics tend to be single-joint oriented, and our resulting program design focused on areas of the body which are causing pain for our clients. We can achieve results using this model but often miss key pieces of information about underlying causes of pain and disfunction which may originate in a very different part of the body. This workshop will present a different approach to postural assessment, based on Tom Myers 'Anatomy Trains’ - myofascial chains which run the length and breadth of the body. Looking at the body with these lines in mind, we are able to see with a whole-body approach and consider how different parts of the body influence each other. We will look at some theory, then practice looking at bodies from this new perspective. We will then do some program design based on what we see from this new perspective. Come with an open mind, and be prepared to put aside your traditional anatomy and bio-mechanics training for a few hours and try a different perspective.
Presenter Gina Richter's interest in movement started when she studied dance as a child. In 1986 she was certified by BKS Iyengar and taught for 10 years at the Balmain Yoga Studio, before discovering the Pilates Method of Body Conditioning.
Gina studied Classical Pilates with former New York City Ballet dancer, Cynthia Lochard, and with Romana Kryzanowska, one of only six Pilates ‘Elders’ who worked directly with Joseph in his studio. Gina attained her US certification in 1998, established Powerhouse Pilates Studio in Sydney in 1999, and was director of the studio for 17 years.
In 2016, Gina qualified as a Structural Integrator (Rolfer) with Tom Myers after training and studying in the modality for five years. In March 2019, she completed her certification as a GYROTONIC® trainer. Today Gina runs a small, home-based studio in Dulwich Hill, combining Structural Integration with Pilates and GYROTONIC® exercises. She enjoys problem solving clients presenting with complex postural and pain patterns
