This workshop will cover common musculoskeletal dysfunctions of pregnancy and appropriate modifications for pilates training in this special population. The workshop will detail anatomic and biomechanical changes that occur during pregnancy and birth that require consideration when women return to pilates postpartum. We will cover the latest evidence related to diastasis of rectus abdominus and how to translate that into practice. Finally we will overview common dysfunction of pelvic floor and how to cue these muscles appropriately during pilates training.
Presenter Kym Veale is the Director of Womankind Physiotherapy located in Eltham and Yarrambat. Womankind Physiotherapy is dedicated to optimising health in women specifically around pregnancy, postpartum, pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, prolapse, continence, sexual pain and breastfeeding conditions such as mastitis. Womankind Studio runs fitness and pilates classes dedicated to women through all stages of life. She has been a teacher at LaTrobe University Physiotherapy School for the Gender Specific Studies and is the Vice President of the Continence Foundation of Australia Victorian Physiotherapy Group. She is a teacher on the Lactating Breast Course for Physiotherapists educating physiotherapists across Australia and internationally on the management of mastitis and inflammatory breast conditions. In 2015 she developed an Active Birth Skills Workshop to empower couples for labour, birth and physical recovery. Kym has a background in classical ballet and pilates and trained with the Australian Ballet School’s junior and senior associate program through her teenage years. Kym has two young daughters and in her spare time, she likes to exercise, and spend time with her family.
