Your Requirements

Evidence is required for membership applications. Each level differs so please check that you have the correct information.

ASSOCIATE membership - For anyone interested in the Pilates Method. 

Required:

• Completion of online application form
• Payment of membership fee at time of application
  
  

STUDENT membership - For students currently enrolled in a Pilates Teacher Course. Membership is valid for 2 years from the time of enrollment in a course.

Required:

• Completion of online application form
• Letter on letterhead from Course Provider stating course currently enrolled in
• Payment of membership fee at time of application 

LEVEL 1 Associate Teacher Membership

Required:

• Pilates Teachers who have successfully completed a Government Accredited Certificate IV will be granted direct membership at Level One. Please complete the application form at page three and four, providing the requested information to the APMA Administrator, via mail or scan and email.
• If you have not completed a Certificate IV in Pilates Matwork, your course content, professional experience and professional development activities will be assessed against the criteria for membership as attached. If there are any missing competencies or requirements, a Practical and/or Written Assessment process will take place.
  
  

MINIMUM FORMAL COURSE CONTENT EXPECTATIONS

For applicants who have not completed a Government accredited course, evidence of completion of a formal Pilates Matwork course of study in the Pilates method (minimum of 65 hours delivery over a 6-­12 month period) is essential. The following topics or components of your training/professional skillset need to be evidenced for membership. If you have not completed all as required, you will be invited to complete some aspect of the Assessment process as indicated below.

Course content membership prerequisites  

• Formal qualification including self study, personal practice, lecture and practical participation totalling at least 65 hours over 6-­12 months 
• Evidence of 60 hours of Personal Pilates Practice
• Evidence of 65 hours of Supervised Teaching Practice (Apprenticeship)
• Core stabilization – current approach and functional anatomy.
• History, philosophy and principles of Pilates 
• Functional/Applied anatomy in Pilates context 
• Assessment: To include Biomechanics, Postural and Initial Assessment procedures, limited special needs/populations.
• Matwork repertoire – 34 traditional exercises, pre-­Pilates and modern interpretations, including some small prop repertoire
• Teaching Methodology – Progression/ Modification/ Breakdown 
• Studio management, Ethics, Health and Safety, and Standards of Practice
  
  

ADDITIONAL MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA 

• Formal training in Anatomy and Physiology, as applied to the Pilates context.
• Copy of current PI/PL insurance policy specific to the practice of Pilates.
• Current Apply First Aid certification.
• Proof of attendance at no less than 10 hours of Pilates specific Professional Development over the 2 year period prior to application.
• Proof of a minimum of 200 hours Teaching experience over the 2 year period prior to  application. 

LEVEL 2 Teacher and LEVEL 3 Professional Practitioner Membership 

Required:

• Pilates Teachers who have successfully completed a) a Government Accredited Diploma or b) the APMA’s Level 2 Pilates Instructor Course will be granted direct membership at Level Two. Pilates Teachers who have successfully completed a Government Accredited Advanced Diploma will be granted direct membership at Level Three. Please complete the application form at page three and four, and provide the requested information to the APMA Administrator, via mail or scan and email.
• If you have not completed a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Pilates, your qualification’s course content, professional experience and professional development activities will be assessed against the criteria for membership as attached. If there are missing competencies or requirements, a Practical and/or Written Assessment Process will take place.
  
  

MINIMUM FORMAL COURSE CONTENT EXPECTATIONS for Level 2 & Level 3:

For applicants who have not completed a Government accredited course, evidence of completion of a formal course of study in the Pilates method, being a minimum of 100 hours over an 8 to 12 months period is essential. The following topics are required components of your training/professional skillset for eligibility for membership. If you have not completed all topic content, you will be required to complete some aspect of the Assessment process as indicated below.

Course Content Membership Prerequisites 

• Formal qualification including self study, personal practice, lecture and practical participation totalling at least 100 hours over a 8-­12 months 
• Evidence of 150 hours of Personal Pilates Practice
• Evidence of 200 hours of Supervised Teaching Practice (Apprenticeship) 
• Core stabilization – Current approach and functional anatomy.
• History, philosophy and principles of Pilates 
• Functional/Applied anatomy in Pilates context
• Client Assessment procedures/ Postural assessment/Common pathologies 
• Repertoire applied to all equipment and matwork 
• Teaching methodology – Progression/ Modification/ Breakdown
• Studio management, Ethics, Health and Safety, and Standards of practice
  
  

ADDITIONAL MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA 

• Formal training in Anatomy and Physiology as applied to the Pilates context.
• Copy of current PI/PL insurance policy specific to the practice of Pilates.
• Current Apply First Aid certification.
• In addition, if your qualification was obtained more than 2 years ago, you are required to supply-­
  - Proof of attendance at no less than 10 hours of Pilates specific Professional Development over the 2 year period prior to application.
  - Proof of a minimum of 1000 hours Teaching experience over the 2 year period prior to application. 

LEVEL 4 Professional Practitioner Membership - Level 4 is only available to current members who have met the below requirements.

Required:

• Need to have held current APMA Level 2 or Level 3 membership for a minimum period of 1 year 
• Provide evidence of 7,500 teaching hours. Evidence can be as follows
  - Signed Statutory Declaration showing the following details: number of teaching hours by year, studio name(s), type of work (mat or equipment), whether self-employed or employed.
  - Signed letter from employer (on letterhead) stating number of teaching hours whilst employed at each particular studio.
